Should you find that a resource or borrower cannot be found when the corresponding barcode is scanned with a barcode reader, you should consider setting up the appropriate barcode mask so it can be read in the system. In order to make the correct configuration, it is important to know 2 things:
1. The number that is being output by the scanner
The most effective way to determine this is to scan the barcode into a neutral program, such as Microsoft Notepad or Word because sometimes the printed barcode label is different to the actual outputted value.
2. The number of the resource/borrower in the system
Locate the corresponding resource/borrower barcode by locating them in the Resources or Borrower table.
When these two key pieces of information have been found out, you should then have an idea of how the barcode needs to be read in the system. For example, let's assume that we have a borrower barcode being output as 04958 but in the library system this shows as 4958 (no leading zero). We can see that mask, configured to read 04958, needs to truncate the leading 0 so that they match.
In another example, if a resource barcode is being output as A19928 but the associated book is stored as 19928 in the library system, it's apparent that the first character ('A') needs to be stripped off by the barcode mask.
