The system can automatically assign barcodes to resources when the Auto button is invoked from the new resource window. This feature is not always used and greatly depends on how you allocate your barcodes. The majority of users print barcodes ahead of time before cataloguing (or receive barcode labels FREE from MLS) and scan the barcode number instead of using the auto function. However, there may be some situations where you would like to have one automatically generated. The automatic barcode options define the rules of how the system generates this automatic number.

There are two options that can be specified in the settings; Length and Character.

The Length field determines the the amount of digits the barcode should be when generated. For example, setting the length to 5 will always ensure that the barcode is at least 5 digits, so if the first number was 25, the number generated would be 00025.
The Character field is used to append a letter at the beginning of the barcode. If the length is 5, the character is B and the first generated barcode is 26 then the actual barcode generated will B00026. Notice that the character is appended, the actual length of the barcode is now 6. If you choose to enter a Character, we recommend that you enter an upper case letter.
